Online Clinical Supervision for Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapists

Supervision sessions to meet the BABCP criteria for accreditation

John Dunlop, Psychologist, BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor

Online Clinical Supervision for CBT Psychotherapists

Clinical supervision is an essential component in the practice of Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy. Supervision helps to develop essential skills, practitioner reflection, and learning in order to maintain high standards of client care.

I am John Dunlop. I am a Psychologist and a BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. I offer online clinical supervision to Accredited and non-Accredited CBT Therapists, from novice to very experienced. Such mental health professionals may have different core professions, such as Psychiatry, Mental Health Nursing, Counselling, Psychology, etc.

My primary aim is to provide a safe environment for therapists to discuss their concerns, casework, or other professional issues in a structured way and to work within the ethical guidelines set down by the BABCP.

I am a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist with more than ten years of experience in offering CBT and clinical supervision.

The CBT models I work with are Beck's Cognitive Therapy, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, and Metacognitive Therapy.

How CBT Supervision is conducted

In my supervision sessions, I recommend CBT therapists to use audio/video recordings of their sessions with clients. It's also advisable to record our supervision meetings in order to be able to take proper notes later. I give very detailed and constructive feedback that assists mental health professionals for their development. This type of supervision, which the BABCP terms 'live supervision', is a requirement for those seeking accreditation with the BABCP.

I offer face-to-face and also online clinical supervision on a one to one basis. Many of my supervisees live in different areas. Some of them live outside the UK. In these cases, when travel or distance is a problem, online supervision is then offered by means of video conferencing (i.e., Skype or Vsee). For those who do not have Internet access, supervision is provided on the phone as long as a recording and any relevant printed material are sent by mail/email to me prior to the supervision session.

Clinical Supervision Using the Cognitive Therapy Scale (CTS-R)

Clinical Supervision Using the Cognitive Therapy Scale (CTS-R)

I use of the Cognitive Therapy Scale (CTS-R), which is a 12-item scale with each question focusing on one important CBT competency skill, ranging from agenda-setting, eliciting key cognitions, homework setting to more complex CBT competencies. The use of the CTS-R in supervision is also a requirement for accreditation purposes for the BABCP if you are undergoing CBT training.

It's recommended that CBT therapists (accredited or non-accredited) attend one and a half hours of supervision per month because that's the minimum established by the BABCP. However, inexperienced CBT psychotherapists ideally should have two or three sessions a month, depending on the number of clients they see in a week.

I charge £100 for one and a half hours of supervision session or £65 for a 50-minute one (if you're working part-time). If you would like to discuss your supervisory needs, please contact me by email or by phone on 02890586361.
